Fallout 76 has had a rough launch but no one really knew how bad the situation is until reports of the game possibly going free to play started surfacing. The news remains unconfirmed but it looks like preparations for Fallout 76 going free to play are possibly underway. EB Games, one of the biggest video game retailers in Australia is reportedly removing physical copies of Fallout 76 from its shelves.

It’s the go-to for any struggling game when they realize it’s the best way to bulk up their playerbase, as they’ll hope to make money in other ways. But you do not usually hear this when talking about an enormous, just-released triple A product like Fallout 76, which should tell you what dire straits it’s perceived to be in right now.

Lowering the price to zero will also lure more players, which makes more sense here than most online games. Despite what you may have heard about its PvP elements, Fallout 76 is an almost entirely cooperative game that works best in a group, and a free-to-play option would remove a barrier that keeps skeptical friends from heading into the wasteland. As Bethesda announced last night, Fallout 76 is an online survival game where you will interact with other vault dwellers who hope to rebuild the world. Todd Howard, Bethesda director and executive producer, mentioned that while it’s possible to play 76 on your own, the game will be easier with buddies. Actually, based on the footage shown off by Bethesda, it doesn’t seem like the world of Fallout 76 has many survivors beyond other players. There were seemingly no non-playable characters to speak of during the trailer, only teammates, rivals, and hostile creatures.

It seems that Fallout 76 is not going free to play. We don't have any evidence that Bestheda intends to make Fallout 76 F2P, either, at the very least for the time being. Players who already own the game can continue carrying on their adventures in Applachia in relative peace. Fallout 76 is the latest Fallout adventure, and it's the earliest game in the Fallout timeline. Previous games in the series mention Vault 76 as one of the earliest bunkers to be opened -- a little more than 20 years after the bombs dropped, and Bethesda confirmed that on the stage at E3 2018.
