MLB The Show 19 begins with an ode to spring: the opening cutscene waxes lyrical about the world blooming into color with bright blue skies and beaming sun rays amid the chirping of birds, before moving onto the hope, optimism, and excitement that accompanies a new season of Major League Baseball. America's favorite pastime is synonymous with the transition from winter's gloomy doldrums to the warmer weather of spring, and Sony San Diego's long-running baseball series has become a complementary part of that equation. This is due in no small part to the high level of quality The Show has maintained throughout its lifespan, and MLB 19 is no different, implementing smart new tweaks and significant refinements to its on-field action, while introducing entertaining new modes to its authentic flavor of baseball excellence.

For players looking to play over a long time, there is the classic Franchise mode, which saw few changes, but the new March to October mode is a new way to play through Franchise mode with your favorite team. The new mode shortens the season by only making you play key moments such as Opening Day, or a game against a division rival. This alleviates a lot of the pressure and time sink of playing a full 162 game season. Once you finish a single season in March to October mode, the game carries over into a Franchise. As someone who loves playing Franchise mode, but rarely has time for a full season, March to October is an exciting new way to make Franchise more accessible. Diamond Dynasty is back. But despite interesting additions such as another tier of unlocks dubbed Signature Series, the mode isn't going to win over those who don't care for it in the first place. Fans of the mode will again be happy to see things like battle royale and some expanded conquest maps. The latter is especially interesting and remains a fun way to keep the relentless grind of these card-based modes fresh, as taking territory and winning over fans is fun.

A couple of innovations within Diamond Dynasty stick out. Team Affinity programs are a way for players to get preferred loot while grinding. Picking a team and a set of team-specific goals nets points, which then allows for team-specific rewards. These range from batting a certain number of times with that team's players to wins with that team. Progress on these challenges can be completed outside of Diamond Dynasty too, which is a nice touch.

San Diego Studios’ emphasis on implementing changes based on community feedback and thinking outside of the box with MLB The Show 19 has paid off. It’s the best iteration of the game to date and all the changes are meaningful on and off the field. There are still some legacy issues such as lack of details in certain stadiums, getting some of the ball physics right and the online play. Depending on what mode you focus on, RTTS shines the brightest and March to October is an excellent and varying experience. Diamond Dynasty has enough to keep you coming back for more and this is fueled by the Moments missions. The Show should always be considered as one of the top console exclusive games on the market as MLB The Show 19 is the definitive baseball game of this generation.
