Hello,

We have process that deals with hot concentrated acetic acid. Typically we utilize zirconium metal for our corrosion resistant process equipment but sometimes we struggle in getting a particular piece of equipment or instrumentation in zirconium. Would the Utlra-Metal tantalum surface be an adequate substitute for zirconium?

Ultramet CPT Tantalum has excellent corrosion resistance in acetic acid at all concentrations. Applying the Ultramet technology to instrumentation is likely going to be one of its major applications.

Would the Ultra-Metal tantalum surface be a cost effeciive alternative to Zr in this media and would this not allow more flexibility for instrument design option for various processes that deal in strong Acetic acid?

In strong acetic acid typically zirconium (Zr) metal is used. However because of the difficulty of fabricating corrosion resistant instrumentation from Zr, tantalum diffusion surfaces are an excellent alternative. Furthermore, since standard instrumentation made from stainless steel could be made acid resistant with the Ultra-Metal process, a broad range for design options become available that would not be possible in zirconium.

Lets us know exactly what kind of instrumentation you are interested in and we can see if the Ultramet CPT solution is right for you.
